At a very basic level, aerating is simply the process of poking holes in the ground and removing chunks of dense soil with an aeration machine. Brown grass is the visible sign that a problem is occurring at the roots. Most often, the issue is soil compaction. When soil is compacted, air and water have very little room to move and the soil’s roots do not have space to grow. - Take a small metal pole and place one end of the pole on the ground
- Push down on the pole causing it to glide into the soil
