Why Your Lawn Needs Core Aeration

You may be familiar with the old saying, “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” Whether or not that proverb is true is a topic for another blog. Concerning your lawn care, your lawn can have the greener grass—because of aeration.

Your lawn can be the envy of the block! Call Mid Georgia Turf Solutions today at 478-992-5705 for information concerning our core aeration services.

At a very basic level, aerating is simply the process of poking holes in the ground and removing chunks of dense soil with an aeration machine. By doing this, the compacted soil is loosened which allows oxygen, nutrients, and water to reenter the soil. In a short time, your brown grass can once again be a lusciously green lawn.

Why is Aeration Important?

Brown grass is the visible sign that a problem is occurring at the roots. Most often, the issue is soil compaction. When soil is compacted, air and water have very little room to move and the soil’s roots do not have space to grow. However, when you aerate the soil, you are allowing your grass to sink its roots deeper into the soil which makes for healthier looking, stronger-rooted grass.

When you aerate your lawn, you will see a positive change in the way your grass looks and feels. Several benefits of aeration include:

  • Decreased puddling and water overflow
  • Increased heat tolerance
  • Increased drought tolerance
  • Stronger, durable roots
  • Enhance oxygen traffic between soil and atmosphere

Does My Lawn Have Compact Soil?

If you live in Georgia, you most likely have compacted soil. The red Georgia clay is notorious for soil density. Water and air have a hard time weaving its way through the red clay or brown soil.

There is a two-step test to determine if your soil is compact:

  1. Take a small metal pole and place one end of the pole on the ground
  2. Push down on the pole causing it to glide into the soil

Results: If the pole slides easily into your soil about 6 inches, your soil is not compact. If the pole has difficulty entering the soil about 6 inches, contact Mid Georgia Turf Solutions today for more information concerning our core aeration services.
